Deliberative Democracy; Social Movements and the Global Public Sphere (With Emphasis on Habermas's Theory of Communicative Rationality) Alireza Samiei Esfahani 1 Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Yasuj University Sajjad Mirali Master Student of Political Science, Yasuj University (Received: 2013/03/30 - Approved: 2013/12/10) Abstract Democracy is undoubtedly the arena of human activities; because humans interact with each other in this field and express their requests and interests.
This research seeks to investigate and evaluate the extent to which communicative rationality in Habermas's theory affects the way new social movements operate and organize, as well as the types of methods, strategies, and tactics they adopt to achieve their goals.
These movements, by adopting theoretical elements of communicative action from Habermas's theory of deliberative democracy, have presented a new style of political participation in human society.
With this description, the main research question is: what role and position does Habermas's deliberative or conversational democracy have in the types of methods, procedures, and strategies adopted by new social movements, and what impact does this have on the public sphere, especially in the global arena?
Thus, the generalization of Habermas's communicative rationality, which he himself considered the practical condition for its realization to be the elimination of all power structures in the public sphere, has the most important task as the center of gravity of this movement's operations.
- Considering the emphasis of new social movements on reviving and reconstructing the public sphere, a direct and logical relationship can be drawn between this kind of problem-solving and Habermas's communicative rationality.
