The purpose of this study was to investigate the financial costs of sports injuries in different limbs of professional footballers participating in the 88-89 league. All injured players from 6 clubs out of a total of 18 clubs in the Premier League were examined retrospectively and randomly. A total of 69 individuals (mean ± standard deviation age: 24.6 ± 2.5, official playing experience 26.7 ± 4.45) who had sustained an injury leading to some kind of cost were evaluated as research samples. The required information was collected using a modified Hawkins and Fuller questionnaire related to internal and external risk factors for injury, a completed injury report form, and a researcher-made checklist for collecting and recording detailed financial costs. Costs were calculated in two sections: direct and indirect costs. Pearson correlation and ANOVA tests were used to analyze the data (P = 0.005). The results of this study showed that the lower limb with the highest rate of injury (78.5%) accounted for the highest cost (a total of 1.867 billion Tomans), among which the costs related to knee injury, with an injury rate of 39%, were significantly higher (1.410 billion Tomans). 68% of the costs (1.390 billion Tomans) were reported for contact injuries, and almost all non-contact situations that included the remaining costs were reported for the knee and specifically related to ACL and meniscus injuries. The results of the test showed a significant relationship between the cost of injury and the severity of the injury (r = 0.806) and also the difference in cost in different areas of the body (P = 0.01). Many of the players' injuries, especially in the knee joint, can be identified, prevented, and eliminated from the injury scene with proper management. Emphasis on preventive strategies in the occurrence of injury is the key to reducing financial costs in the football industry, which is emphasized in this research.
