Religious Approach of Authentic Iranian Painting to the Depiction of Women 1 Seyyede Razieh Yasini Abstract This article is a research on the view of Muslim painters of Iran before the Safavid era on the subject of “the depiction of women” with a religious approach and based on verses and narrations of Islam.
Based on this, Muslim painters in their works were able to depict beauty and divine grace in the image of women while portraying them in modesty and concealment, and protecting their sanctity in painting, even in the most private interactions.
Among all the images represented in the paintings, examining how humans, and especially women, are depicted can reveal the extent to which Muslim artists in Iran adhered to human dignity based on religious texts.
Due to the true status and position of women in Islamic thought, Iranian Muslim thinkers and writers considered her existence, which is the manifestation of divine beauty specifically in this world, as a metaphor for flirting with the one beloved and, figuratively, as a symbol of the grace and purity of the worshipped.
Muslim painters did not only focus on depicting mere tenderness and beauty in the existence of women, but also combined these aspects with other spiritual and outward qualities such as modesty and dignity, and presented an image of a perfect human being who is praised by human nature.
