چکیده:
Body image, like any other psychological aspect, is a part of human personality that evolves over time and is disturbed and weakened in conditions such as visible deformity. The aim of this study was to compare the body image of individuals with idiopathic scoliosis and healthy individuals. This research is descriptive-comparative. For this purpose, 54 individuals with idiopathic scoliosis with an average age of 18.1 years completed the Mendelson Body Image Questionnaire. Then, a control group was compared with the aforementioned group. The reliability of the questionnaire was obtained using Cronbach's alpha of 0.82. Diagnosis and severity of scoliosis were performed by radiography. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The results showed that there is a significant difference between the body image of individuals with idiopathic scoliosis and healthy individuals (P=0.01) and a significant difference was observed between the level of satisfaction with appearance and satisfaction with others' attitudes in individuals with scoliosis and healthy individuals (P=0.03 and P=0.00). However, no significant difference was observed between satisfaction with weight in individuals with scoliosis and healthy individuals (P=0.17). Curvature of the trunk and secondary changes in the shoulder and scapular region in individuals with scoliosis may cause weakness in body image in these individuals and lead to some psychological complications.
