Muhammad ibn Abi Umayr is one of the prominent and well-known companions of Imam Kazim, Imam Reza, and Imam Jawad; he is a narrator and author of a significant portion of Imami narrations, and his name is noted among the 'Ashab al-Ijma' (Companions of Consensus) as well as among the 'Mashayikh al-Thiqat' (Reliable Teachers) in general biographical works. Since the emergence of these rules, Imami scholars have adopted various intellectual positions and practical behaviors, ranging from broad acceptance to critical rejection. Since Al-Kafi is the first and most important of the four major Shia Hadith books, especially since its selection of narrations was based on the authenticity of issuance and list-based criticism—rather than chain-based—this writing attempts, through a precise examination of his narrations in this weighty book, to answer whether the authenticity of Ibn Abi Umayr's mursal (disconnected) narrations can be assumed, and whether a consensus can be established between the approach of the ancients, such as Sheikh Kulayni, and today's jurisprudential-hadith foundations. According to the investigations conducted, out of 2880 narrations of Ibn Abi Umayr in Al-Kafi, 349 were weak, and among them, seven notorious narrators were observed in the chains of 14 narrations. This, along with historical clues, makes the acceptance of the authority of mursal narrations difficult even regarding this great narrator and emphasizes the necessity of criticizing and reviewing the narrations of Al-Kafi.
