چکیده:
To get a vivid view of an event, it is often recommended to refer to the
works whose authors were contemporary with it. Searching in the earliest
works that record Imam al-Husayn's movement prove that his sublime aims
were higher by far than simply treading a mystical path or following a
martyrdom-only route. Whether or not the Kufans had invited him, he would
never recognize Yazid: there was no other choice but martyrdom for the sake
of safeguarding Islam.

The Departure of the Imam (عليه السلام) from Medina towards Mecca Immediately after the death of Muawiyah in the middle of the month of Rajab in the year 60 AH, Yazid in Sham, according to the will of Muawiyah, declared himself his successor and Commander of the Faithful, and wrote a letter to Walid bin Utbah, the governor of Medina: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Husayn bin Ali (عليه السلام) said: O cousin, the public thoroughfare and the clear straight road is better; let us proceed by this way and keep an eye on the houses of Mecca, and what is the decree and judgment of God Almighty will come of its own accord" (Ibn al-Atham, 1372: 836).
Before this letter, Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) had written a letter to the notables of Kufa, but these individuals did not make the letter public (did not announce it to the people), and even one of them, named Munzir bin Jarud, informed Ibn Ziyad of the content of the letter, and Ubaydullah found the envoy of the Imam (عليه السلام) and beheaded him (Tabari, 1374: 7/2930-2929).
Before the martyrdom of Muslim, he requested Umar bin Sa'd in Ubaydullah's assembly to make a will for him, the most important part of which was asking Umar to write a letter to Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) to warn him against coming to Kufa (Tabari, 1374: 7/2956).
One of the companions of the Imam (peace be upon him) also said: "You are not like Muslim ibn Aqil; if you reach Kufa, people will hasten toward you" (ibid, 7/2986).
