چکیده:
Epistemology is the science that discusses human knowledge, the evaluation of its various types, and the determination of the criteria for their truth or falsehood. Although this subject does not have a long history in the history of sciences as an independent science and a branch of philosophy, thinkers have never been unaware of the issue of cognition and its value and importance, and addressing this topic is not limited to recent decades. In Islamic philosophy and logic, epistemological discussions have also been raised in various dimensions and scattered ways, and many of them have an ontological rather than an epistemological character. In his works, Allameh Tabataba'i has addressed topics related to epistemology and introduced the mediators of cognition, sometimes directly and sometimes through other philosophical discussions and in the manner of predecessors. The present writing examines the mediators of cognition from the perspective of Allameh Tabataba'i. Like other thinkers belonging to Transcendent Wisdom (al-Hikmah al-Muta'aliyah), he has strived to consider the intertwining of mysticism, philosophy, and the Quran in understanding truth, following the prophetic tradition and the conduct of the Imams of Guidance, and to use all three tools of knowledge—namely Sharia (revelation), intellect, and heart—simultaneously and in alignment. From Allameh's perspective, the mediators of cognition are: sense, intellect, fitra (innate nature), and intuition, which itself includes revelation, inspiration, and dream.

Regarding the role of sensory organs in creating this pure form, Allameh believes that the connection of sensory organs with the external object and the actions and reactions occurring therein prepares the soul for the perception of the object—whether particular or universal; and philosophers have said, merely by way of analogy and approximation to the mind, that intellectual perception is achieved through abstraction and separating the object from matter and other characterizing accidents that accompany the object, in such a way that only the essence remains bare of all shells and accidents.
Allameh Tabataba'i considers revelation to be a type of heavenly connection—in a non-material sense—that is not perceived through the senses or intellectual thought, but rather requires another type of perception and consciousness that sometimes, by God's will, is found in certain individuals; these individuals, who are called prophets, receive unseen commands through this way.
