Selecting a new and practical topic for conducting research is a difficult and important task. The aim of this research is to investigate the most important criteria for selecting a research topic from the perspective of graduate students. This research, which was conducted using a survey method, is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in nature. The study population consists of all graduate students in the fields of humanities and social sciences at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz (1489 people), from which an approximate sample size of 306 people was estimated using the Krejcie-Morgan table. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings showed that among the criteria for selecting a research topic, students paid more attention to the criteria of 'novelty and practicality of the topic' and 'the possibility of utilizing research results in the future.' In their view, the criterion of 'spatial and organizational affiliation' does not have much importance. Therefore, the departments and graduate students of humanities and social sciences should consider topics that are new and practical when selecting research topics, as there is a possibility of utilizing their results in the future.
