Although the common expressive method in Quranic verses is explicit expression, in some cases, due to reasons such as: observing politeness, testing people, providing immunity to the Quran, the insignificance of the subject, conveying more grace to servants, and proving the inimitability of the Quran, metaphor, allusion, and ambiguous expression have been used.
Cases of Avoiding Directness in Quranic Verses A) Observance of Etiquette The Holy Quran, to express unpleasant meanings, instead of using offensive and obscene words, employs euphemistic terms so that etiquette is observed and, in this way, invites its audience to greater politeness and appropriate modesty.
Euphemism in the realm of cardiac pleasures The Holy Quran, in expressing Zulaikha's cardiac feelings toward Prophet Joseph (PBUH), through the words of the Egyptian women, has stated: «وَ قَالَ نِسْوَةٌ فِی الْمَدِینَةِ امْرَأَتُ الْعَزِیزِ تُرَاوِدُ فَتَاهَا عَنْ نَفْسِهِ قَدْ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّا؛ (Yusuf / 30) and the women in the city said: "The wife of the Aziz [of Egypt] has been soliciting her young servant for himself, and love [for Joseph] has penetrated her heart!
(Raghib Isfahani, ibid: 747) Allameh Tabataba'i says: "This sentence is a euphemistic expression intended to mean the act of sexual intercourse, and it has been referred to as 'touching women' to observe modesty, so that it does not explicitly name the act which human nature recoils from naming directly.
