» Commander of the Faithful (AS) says in a letter to Malik al-Ashtar: «وَ إِذَا قُمْتَ فِي صَلَاتِكَ لِلنَّاسِ فَلَا تَكُونَنَ مُنَفِّراً وَ لَا مُضَيِّعاً فَإِنَّ فِي النَّاسِ مَنْ بِهِ الْعِلَّةُ وَ لَهُ الْحَاجَةُ وَ قَدْ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟صل؟ حِينَ وَجَّهَنِي إِلَى الْيَمَنِ كَيْفَ أُصَلِّي بِهِمْ فَقَالَ صَلِّ بِهِمْ كَصَلَاةِ أَضْعَفِهِمْ وَ كُنْ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَحِيماً؛ and when you stand for prayer as an Imam for the people, do not conduct it with such length and detail that people become tired and averse to congregational prayer, nor [by neglecting its obligations and etiquettes] let it be wasted; because among those who pray with you, there are also sick and distressed individuals.
The Messenger of God (PBUH) says: «مَن أمَّ قَوماً فَليُخَفِّف، فَاِنَّ فيهِم الضَّعيف وَ الكَبير وَ المَريض وَ ذَا الحاجَة، فَإذا صَلّى وَحدَهُ فَليُصَلِّ كَيفَ شَاء؛ whoever takes charge of the imamate of a people, let him perform [the prayer] briefly, for among them are the weak, the elderly, the sick, and the needy.
Certainly, if the congregational Imam does not pay attention to such matters, instead of attracting people to the mosque and congregational prayer, he may discourage and repel some, which could be a clear manifestation of verse 114 of Surah Al-Baqarah, which says: ; "And who is more unjust than one who prevents the mosques of Allah from being mentioned in them His name and strives for their destruction?
Consequences of Prolonging the Prayer As mentioned, numerous narrations regarding brevity in congregational prayer have reached us, and failure to pay attention to its many consequences can cause serious harm to the presence of people, especially youth and adolescents.
