Ways and Stages of Satan's Infiltration into Humans Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin Ali Abbaszadeh 1 Introduction The terms "Satan" and "Iblis" have different applications in religious teachings; "Satan" in a general sense means an evil and rebellious being. By making ugliness appear good, Satan eliminates the perceived repulsiveness of evil and enters the lives of humans. The meaning of the "four sides" in the verse regarding Satan's invitation and companionship is not geographical directions, but a metaphor; that Satan coming from the front means he makes the hereafter ahead seem insignificant; for example, if a person commits a sin, he says you still have time to repent, you are young, and there is plenty of time for worship; if you go to hell, then woe to those who do not do such things; besides, you want to make up for it in the future. Imam Baqir (AS) says: Satan's coming from the front is making the hereafter seem light and simple, and the meaning of "from behind" is preoccupying people with hoarding wealth and stinginess in paying mandatory rights to heirs and dependents; the goal from the right side is to undermine spiritual matters through ambiguities and creating doubt and uncertainty; and the meaning of the left side is making material pleasures and lust appear attractive to people. According to this verse, Satan presents disbelief, polytheism, and all sins as attractive and beautified in the eyes of humans so that they perceive them as good, and in contrast, perceive faith and obedience to God as ugly and unattractive. Accordingly, in this stage, Satan progresses in such a way that his followers no longer see anything as ugly, and all evils appear good: «فَرَکِبَ بِهِمُ الزَّلَلَ، وَ زَیَّنَ لَهُمْ الْخَطَل».
