Transformation in the Regional Policy of the United Arab Emirates; The Approach of Mohammed bin Zayed 1 Hadi Gholamnia 2 Saeed Pirmohammadi Date of Receipt: 2020/05/18 Date of Final Acceptance: 2020/11/15 Scientific Journal Horizons of Security / Year 13 / Issue 49 - Winter 2020 Abstract In recent years, the process of transitioning the regional position of the UAE from a small power to a player with a special regional role has occurred with increasing speed.
Based on the theoretical propositions of neo-classical realism, the findings of the article show that Mohammed bin Zayed's threatening perception of political Islam—which has been accompanied by Abu Dhabi's control over the security and economic policy of the UAE and the marginalization of Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah, while shaping the identity and preferences of the UAE—has paved the way for this emirate's efforts to fulfill a new regional role based on active presence in regional crises.
For example, Robert Mason argues that the UAE has been able to break the small state classification mold and expand its regional and international influence through coordination with America and following Saudi Arabia in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf He points to two major factors in this regard: first, the existential fear of the UAE regarding Iran's regional policies, and second, political Islamism which threatens the security and survival of Abu Dhabi (Mason, 2018).
