چکیده:
Objective: The objective of this present paper is to investigate Incongruity appreciation in pre-school children’s animated and non-animated pictorial humor stories. Methodology: The participants in this study are 100 preschool children aged 4-6. To do so, we show the participants a part of Tom and Gerry humor animation and a 6 levels picture with humor concept of my daddy and I stories book. The present study is to investigate the answers of these two fundamental questions: what Incongruities do children appreciate in pictorial humor stories? And what difference does gender make in their explanation of humor appreciation on the basis of incongruity theory? Findings: Findings show that these pre-school children are capable of recognizing incongruity in pictorial stories (animated and non-animated) and they can appreciate and present story funny situations via watching pictures. They can appreciate incongruities in a laughable picture by comparing that picture with their mind schemata. X2 Pearson shows that in pre-school ages, regarding appreciating pictorial humor (animated and non-animated) no significant difference was observed between girls and boys. It seems that if meaningful difference exists between two sexes, it will reveal itself after pre-school ages. Investigating the perception of incongruity in children's humorous illustrated stories Sarira Keramati Yazdi PhD graduate in Linguistics, Faculty of Literature and Humanities, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad.
Findings: The results of this research showed that the preschool children under study are able to diagnose incongruity in visual stories (animated and static) and can also perceive and express the funny points of the story through observing images.
Since in this research, in order to investigate the perception of incongruity in children, the method of presenting animated and static pictorial stories has been used, Brown's fourfold classification framework1 (1993) is utilized, which is dedicated to the classification of incongruity in images and has been used and cited as a valid framework in various studies so far.
Findings In this section, we first examine the scenes that caused the children to laugh in the Tom and Jerry animation, and after that, the analysis of the observation data and the description of the selected image from the book "My Stories and My Dad's" is presented.
Funny scenes of the Tom and Jerry animation that made more than half of the children laugh Tom and Jerry (Refer to the page image) Now, to measure the significance of the difference between girls and boys in the number of times they laughed, we use the Pearson chi-square test.
Analysis of the data of observing humorous images Of the 100 children studied in this research, 93 children (45 girls and 48 boys) considered the selected six-stage image from the book "My Stories and My Dad's" to be funny.
