The aim of the present article is to identify the constituent components of Habermas's theory of communicative action and its implications in higher education. The research was conducted using a qualitative method and a descriptive-analytical approach, relying on the views and thoughts of Jürgen Habermas in the theory of communicative action. Given the existence of problems such as weakness in establishing correct communication, lack of logical approach to issues, and failure to reach intellectual consensus among academic actors in our country, addressing those dimensions of Habermas's thoughts that are consistent with the indigenous philosophy and culture of our country can be effective. In the stages of conducting the research, first, the main components of Habermas's theory of communicative action were identified. Then, the implications of this theory in Iranian higher education were analyzed and inferred. The results show that Habermas's theory of communicative action is based on the essential components of the public sphere, lifeworld, system, communicative action, and rational action. Although Habermas pays attention to the role of universities in social reproduction, Habermas's criticism of the functions of higher education is that in capitalist society, instead of emphasizing the expansion of communicative action in the public sphere, the university has been placed at the service of a kind of private sphere under the banner of instrumental thinking in the realms of economy and politics (Delanti, 2010, pp.
The present research, while taking into account the gap mentioned in the studies of Delanty and Terry, brings the essential components of Habermas's thought within the framework of the theory of communicative action closer to the realm of practice and application in higher education and the university.
