Multilingualism in Literary Fields: Importance, Applications, and Deficiencies Dr. Alireza Manoucheharian* Abstract: In Iran, generally every scholar, and especially those in certain humanities (such as theology and philosophy), and most specifically people of literature, need to know Persian, Arabic, and a foreign language, which in reality means being (trilingual) 1.
Let us remember that if, in the time of Hafez, Saadi, and Khaqani, knowing Persian and Arabic was sufficient to achieve mastery in literature, today, due to various literary schools, modern critical theories, and the increasing communications between the nations of the world, the necessity of familiarity with foreign languages also arises, which makes our task of combining ancient and modern science and literature very difficult; therefore, finding multilingual literati in this era is quite unattainable.
Suggestion: By presenting such an article and providing a theoretical platform, in order to resolve the problems mentioned above, the author suggests the establishment of the "Faculty of Poetry and Literature"15 in Tehran, in such a way that every year, a limited number of literature enthusiasts who possess sufficient talent are recruited through the national entrance exam and a general examination, we recruit them, and through a ten-year training period, we grant these scholars a combined doctorate in literature (comparative), so that during these years they both acquire sufficient literary proficiency in Persian and Arabic to be the heirs of Hafez and Saadi, and also become proficient in a foreign language and can introduce the literature of the Orient to the world through teaching and authorship.
