چکیده:
The concept of political legitimacy is one of the most important and fundamental terms and concepts in political science and especially political thought. The difference in the concept of political legitimacy from the perspective of different thinkers stems mostly from the difference in their views on the source of political legitimacy. In this article, using a comparative method, the views of Imam Khomeini and Jürgen Habermas regarding the concepts of political legitimacy, rationality, and modernity will be compared with each other. Both Imam Khomeini and Jürgen Habermas have their own specific definitions of political legitimacy, rationality, and modernity, which, given their different intellectual foundations, do not have a specific affinity with each other. The thought of Imam Khomeini is based on religious belief in accordance with the Quran, while Habermas's views are formed within a Western culture that criticizes contemporary capitalist society. However, how it is possible for both of these thinkers, with two different intellectual foundations, to share opinions in some cases will be the main subject of discussion here.

Given that these two thinkers are very important and prominent figures in their intellectual field, as well as their contemporaneity, their commonalities in some study areas, their history-making and trend-setting nature, the importance of their thought in their own societies, and the influences they had on their societies; the writer was prompted to undertake a comparative study in this field; so that it could address the common study areas of these two thinkers, and indeed the commonalities Considering the Imam's view on the three terms of humanism, secularism, and nationalism, which are essential characteristics of modernity, and given that the foundations of Imam Khomeini's thoughts are derived from religious sources, they produce a thought and theory that finds no common ground with modernity and its fundamental concepts, especially modernism, and only explains the divergence in their relationship.
