The increasing use of information and communication technology in modern organizations has provided them with a highly volatile and competitive environment and has increased the necessity of knowledge dynamics. One of these dynamics, under the name of a phenomenon called organizational forgetting, has emerged, which can be either accidental or intentional, harmful or beneficial; however, in all cases, it can significantly affect the competitive advantage of an organization. Organizational Forgetting: A Challenge Facing Knowledge Management 1 Dr. Gholamali Tabarsa 1 Leila Mirzadeh (Date received 2011/06/05 - Date approved 2012/04/30) Abstract With the growing recognition of the importance of knowledge as a strategic resource for modern organizations, it is no surprise that in recent decades, discussions on organizational learning and knowledge management have become the focus of extensive research by management scholars.
This phenomenon can be either accidental (unintentional) or intentional (intended), and based on the source of knowledge, the division of these two types of forgetting results in four forgetting processes including: 1) decay or loss of memory, 2) failure in knowledge acquisition, 3) forgetting knowledge, and 4) avoidance of bad habits.
The difference between these two types of forgetting is that intentional forgetting leads to the acquisition of useful knowledge and consequently increases the organization's competitive advantage, whereas accidental forgetting leads to the loss of important parts of organizational knowledge that is scattered within the minds of individuals, groups, departments, operational processes, customs, and laws and regulations, thereby reducing its competitive advantage.
After unlearning, __________________________________________________________ 1- Memory Decay 2- Failure to Capture 3- Unlearning 4- Avoiding Bad Habits disrupting knowledge by violating current affairs, changing structures, and managing cultures in ways that cause the deeply embedded knowledge to be lost.
Therefore, for their survival and to increase competitive capability in today's complex and changing environments, organizations must effectively manage organizational forgetting processes during organizational learning and knowledge management.
