Tajerbashi was a title and position that was given to some high-ranking Iranian and Muslim merchants until the Qajar era, and as government representatives, they organized domestic and foreign commercial relations. With the beginning of the 13th Hijri/19th century AD, when transformations in the international political and economic systems placed the Qajar era of Iran under even greater influence, Iran's position and status in the global community changed, and this redefined various sectors of society, including Iranian merchants, in relation to the global system. In this regard, the title Tajerbashi, which had specific functions in previous eras, was used for those merchants who held the position of economic and legal representation of foreign governments and embassies in the country. The present article examines the why and how of the process of selecting the Tajerbashi by foreign governments in Iran, as well as the role and performance of the holder of this position during the Qajar period.
