When we consider the factor of fatalism, which itself depends on other socio-cultural conditions of the individual, we observe that in both fatalistic and non-fatalistic groups, the necessity of educating boys is confirmed to an equal extent; however, the issue is different regarding girls.
«Abstract» Given the importance of the issue of literacy and the significant role of fathers in the tendency toward educating children, the aim of the study conducted among 752 heads of households in Turkmen-populated villages of Gonbad-e Kavus county in 1355 was to determine whether the necessity of literacy for girls and boys is confirmed equally by fathers and, if a difference exists in this regard, which factors are most influential.
The results of the study show that the literacy of boys has greater importance and, since it is almost confirmed by all fathers, their conditions in terms of age, occupational group, use of mass media, and fatalism play no role in their opinions; whereas the necessity of literacy for girls is more confirmed by those who are literate, enjoy better material conditions, and have less dependence on fatalistic values.
