Imamate, alongside Tawhid, Prophethood, and Resurrection, is one of the fundamental principles of Shiite thought. Only through a correct and comprehensive understanding of it can God's religion be properly known and protected from misguidance. In the Shiite view, Imamate is not summarized merely in its outward aspects. By God's permission, the Imam holds guardianship over existence, and inner guardianship is the spirit of Imamate. In this writing, to prove the inner guardianship of the Imams (AS), we begin by examining the application of two meanings of the word Wilayah: proximity and guardianship. By contemplating the Quran and traditions, we briefly state the various aspects of the inner guardianship of the Imams (AS) under the following axes: inner guidance, showing the state of hearts in the hereafter, the presentation of deeds to the Imam (AS), witnessing of deeds, the descent of divine decrees, the pillars of the earth, bearing the Greatest Name (Ism al-A'zam), knowledge of the unseen, disposals and miracles, and inner luminosity.
