The present article recalls some of the worthy etiquettes and behaviors of religious scholars in facing the people.
Populist behavior means the life of the scholar is like the life of ordinary people in both public and private; just as the Infallible Imams (peace be upon them) were.
A religious scholar must also follow the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and, like him, be populist (approachable).
The examples of being populist are numerous and cannot all be mentioned; however, the general concept is to have one heart with the people; such that the religious scholar is a helper to those around him in hardships, visits them in sickness, prays for them during travel, has an attentive ear to listen to their words, answers their questions to the best of his ability, and ultimately, in every situation, is compassionate and a guide to them.
Such behavior, in the words of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), causes people to grieve in the absence of a religious scholar and to desire connection with him in his presence: خالطوا النّاس مخالطة إن متّم معها بکوا علیکم و إن غبتم حنّوا إلیکم.
Such conduct of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him and his family, is instructive for religious scholars; because there may be individuals with different cultures and tastes around them.
The Holy Quran introduces having humility as a strategic principle for the duty of guidance of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him and his family: {/و اخفض جناحک لمن اتّبعک من المؤمنین.
