In every scientific community, there are organizations that play various roles in strengthening that scientific community. Organizations that publish scientific achievements, research centers, and scientific associations are among these organizations. Examining the role of each of these in the structure of the scientific system and community is part of the field of sociology of science. Scientific associations play an important role in this regard. In 1378, the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, by issuing a regulation, announced the formation of student scientific associations. In a very short period, a large number of these associations were created in universities and many students engaged in activities within them. Many goals were intended for the establishment of these associations, but in this article, from the perspective of the sociology of science, the potential functions of these associations are redefined. Furthermore, with the help of an empirical study in three universities—Tehran, Mazandaran, and Gilan—the extent to which some of the envisioned functions are realized will be evaluated.

62-82 -Introduction Numerous elements such as scientists, students, universities, periodicals, book publishers, non-academic research centers, scientific associations, rules and norms governing the behavior of actors within the scientific community, processes of science production, venues for interaction between actors, and situations of collective action such as gatherings and scientific seminars are the most significant entities constituting a scientific community.
In this type of definition, science is an institution in which: advancement relies on a system of gaining reputation, the cohesion of this institution is ensured through the process of "being recognized by others"1 and gatekeepers2 who monitor activities, the dissemination of ideas is based on networks, its expansion is based on fashion, resistance to new ideas is part of it, progress occurs through revolution, and finally, scientific knowledge is not the product of the objective reflections of individuals in a vacuum, but rather results from the special arrangement of a group of people living in a society (Becher and Trowler, 2001:101).
