Fuzzy sets are categories with indefinite and overlapping boundaries. In classical sets, an object is either a member of a set or it is not, but objects can simultaneously be members of more than one fuzzy set to some extent. Many concepts in social sciences possess this same characteristic. Fuzzy set theory provides methods for the systematic examination of such concepts. In this article, the advantages of fuzzy techniques over conventional statistical analysis methods in social research are investigated by researching one of the most key and controversial social variables, namely the concept of occupational status. In this article, a fuzzy ranking of occupational status in the city of Rasht is presented, which is not only based solely on the results obtained from the subjective judgments of respondents and in accordance with their views, but also simultaneously provides a partial ranking within each main category through a fuzzy distribution allowing values between zero and one. The final result is a 5 × 92 matrix, where 92 is the number of occupations and 5 is the number of main status ranking categories. In this matrix classification, each occupation instead occupies only one position in the 'excellent to very low' spectrum, while belonging to all these positions to some extent. In this way, the fundamental flaws in cluster analysis methods, where changes in method and the number of occupations lead to different classifications, are largely resolved, and in fact, a better representation of reality becomes possible.

Of course, in the method based on fuzzy logic, the number of categories can essentially be according to the researcher's or respondent's opinion, and the final result is relatively independent of this choice, because the degree of overlap between categories, which is the most important part of a fuzzy scale, is extracted from the total responses given to each occupation, not from the response of each individual.
In the present research, the selection of the number of clusters is also provable using the validity criterion dependent on the external criterion, such that in many common studies, a five-part scale has been used; and also to confirm this perception in the text and social context, in one of the pre-tests conducted with open-ended questions, more than 93 percent of respondents used vocabulary with a 5-part ranking, and more than 74 percent used exactly the words high, good, medium, low, and very low to express the status of a occupation were seeking.
