چکیده:
The subject of the present research was to investigate and compare the amount and type of internet use in relation to the mental health and academic performance of female and male high school students in the second stage of high schools in Tehran city in the academic year 1387. For the implementation of this research, a sample with a volume of 250 students (126 girls and 124 boys) was selected using the cluster random sampling method. To collect information, the Goldberg and Hildg (1979) 28-item General Health Questionnaire, the Metreife (2000) Internet Use Questionnaire, and a researcher-made questionnaire (1387) were used. In this research, the first-term GPA of second-year high school students was used as the criterion for academic performance. To analyze the collected information, the correlation coefficient method, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffé test, and independent T-test were used. The results of this analysis showed that there is a significant inverse relationship between the amount and type of internet use and academic performance, and also a significant inverse correlation is seen between the amount and type of internet use and mental health; however, no difference between the two genders in the amount and type of internet use was observed in this research. Overall, the present research showed that with an increase in the amount of internet use, the academic performance and mental health of students decrease, and also, the more individuals have communicative and recreational use of the internet, the more their academic performance and mental health decrease.
خلاصه ماشینی:
Also, the correlation obtained between the general mental health of students and their communicative use of the internet is r = -0/2, which shows that there is a negative and significant relationship between these two variables.
Table 13: The amount of correlation between the type of internet use and the sub-component of depression (Refer to the page image)Therefore, it can be said that according to Hypothesis 4, there is a positive and significant correlation between the two variables of communicative functioning and recreational functioning with depression in students.
Table 14: The amount of correlation between the type of internet use and general mental health (Refer to the page image)The amount of correlation obtained between the general mental health of students and their educational use The Scheffe post-hoc test shows that anxiety among those who use the internet infrequently differs from those who use it extensively, and this difference is significant (sig = 0.
Thus, the aim of the present research was to obtain information regarding the amount and type of Internet use among female and male high school students in Tehran and its relationship with their mental health and academic performance, since awareness of Internet challenges can facilitate any form of education for youth and adolescents.
