چکیده:
The aim of the present research is to examine the status of the MARC standard (machine-readable cataloging) in Iran and to identify its capabilities and limitations. In this research, library study methods and interviews with several specialists in the fields of library and information science and computer science were used. Among the most important capabilities of MARC, items such as: a standard for storing and exchanging bibliographic information, the possibility of exchanging bibliographic information in different languages, and the possibility of creating bibliographies can be mentioned. Additionally, the unfamiliarity of librarians and library teachers with MARC, the non-compliance of library software with MARC, and inconsistency in using a single type of MARC are among the problems of MARC application in Iran.

VK} Introduction Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) was created in 1966 as a method to convert Library of Congress card data with the aim of printing bibliographic productions in a machine-readable format.
(Refer to the page image) MARC and New Developments MARC (machine-readable cataloging) was created as a tool for exchanging library catalog records to respond to the need of libraries for a standard format for the exchange and sharing of cataloging records.
Other standards for encoding digital information in machine-readable form, such as Dublin Core, Extensible Markup Language (XML), and Resource Description Framework (RDF)5, are still under development.
Libraries have been using the MARC format for years to encode the bibliographic records of their information resources, which has facilitated the sharing of cataloging records, reduced costs, and improved services.
With such a structure, not only does the machine processing of Iranian publications move towards standardization, but the exchange of cataloging and bibliographic data among Iranian libraries and between Iran and other countries in the world also becomes easier.
Given the mentioned cases, Kokabi believes that the future of MARC is reliable as long as organizations are interested in exchanging their bibliographic records with other institutions, and also as long as computer and library specialists have not designed more economical and simpler methods for transferring and processing bibliographic data with different formats (13:68-72).
