چکیده:
Relying on the consequences of modernity, such as the dominance of reason, imposed technology, surveillance, organizational interference in individuals, the pattern of standardization, etc., this article shows a human who has been emptied of imagination, metaphysical beliefs, indigenous culture, individual identity, etc. A helpless and powerless human who lacks the ability and possibility to change their surrounding circumstances. Magical realism and the situation story are two modern modes or currents in contemporary storytelling that, in addition to their independent characteristics, have the capability and possibility of coexistence in a single story due to several fundamental components and shared infrastructures. Compared to magical realism, the situation story is an emerging and unknown current in Iran that has been less addressed. The short story 'A Plant in Quarantine' by Bijan Najdi is a locus for merging these two storytelling approaches. The present article extracts and classifies the unique components of magical realism and the situation story—such as characterization, mystery and objectivity of phenomena, structure and nature of the situation—as well as the shared features and infrastructure of both modes, such as inevitability, the absence of causal relationships, and protest reactions, which are formulations of modernity. To further familiarize the reader with each component, it presents narrative examples from prominent figures of these two currents: namely Marquez and Borges in magical realism, and Kafka in the situation story; then it analyzes and examines the aforementioned story from the intended perspective. By simultaneously analyzing the story from the perspective of the two aforementioned modes, the possibility of exploring the story expands, and new dimensions are opened before the reader's eyes.

1. Introduction Two trends or modes of storytelling, magic realism and the story of circumstance (story of circumstance), in addition to their distinct characteristics, have the capability and possibility of coexistence within a single story due to their sharing of several fundamental components, including sudden occurrence, lack of causal relationships, incomprehensibility, and also a protest reaction to the structures and consequences of the modern world; the dominance of the system over individuals, the rule of reason and power and its control over all dimensions of human life, and the emptying of the individual of mythological beliefs, indigenous culture, and individual identity.
(Marquez, 5831:062) In the story 'A Plant in Quarantine', the magical phenomenon (the lock) is the axis of conflict and struggle (between Taher, the symbol of tradition and indigenous beliefs, and the man in white, the representative of the rule of reason and modern life).
1 In Najdi's story, the magical phenomenon (the lock) enters Taher's life suddenly and under the pretext of illness.
