The adjective "empathetic" in the definition of "aesthetic attitude" refers to our way of being prepared to react to the object. With this caveat, my definition of "aesthetic attitude" is as follows: "Impartial and empathetic attention to any object of awareness, and contemplation of it, solely for its own sake. Thus, when our attitude is "practical," we perceive objects only as means to achieve a goal, beyond the experience of perceiving them.
