In fact, as Engineer Mehdi Bazargan, the first Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic, warned in the final years of his life, and as an increasing number of Muslim Iranians whose faith in their religion and sect is still steadfast and firm have well realized: Previously, the educated, worldly, and religious classes saw themselves facing external intellectual and cultural attacks and the awakenings resulting from them, which caused the weakening or destruction of faiths; but now they are witnessing weakenings and destructions that are mostly due to the experience of the revolution and internal factors and influences.
In the years following the revolution, indirect and peaceful challenges have perhaps been the most common, and in the long term, the most important, method of resistance against the government—especially in conditions where practically no possibility for political participation has been given to any of the opposing parties and organizations (even the Freedom Movement of Iran, which has constantly declared its loyalty and commitment to the system and the Constitution of the Islamic Republic12).
Ultimately, the creation of an open and democratic political system in Iran is not possible without sustained efforts to strengthen institutions independent of the state, support for peaceful methods of resistance against the regime's transgressions, persistent defense of human rights standards and individual, religious, and political freedoms, and finally, direct participation in professional, partisan, and political activities within the framework of democratic values and methods.
