One of the important dimensions of the Imam's leadership in the Sacred Defense was the unity that he created among the armed forces, all officials, and the people, and this very unity was one of the great factors in the victories of our dear combatants, just as announcing presence in the battlefields as a communal obligation (wajib kifayi) and making war and the Sacred Defense a primary issue is another aspect of this role.
Our strength lies in the extent of our connection to God. In the early days of the war, when I wanted to go from the Khorramshahr Corps (a corps that was stationed in Abadan and performed heroic and wonderful resistance against the enemy in the Khorramshahr fronts) to Qom, I went to say goodbye to the great martyr Mohammad Jahan Ara, the commander of the Khorramshahr Corps, and he said in a simple yet eloquent manner: Convey my greetings to Ayatollah Meshkini — and other great figures of the seminary — and tell them that we commanders are putting all our efforts into work so that first, we may satisfy the stomachs of the combatants (meet the general needs of the front) and second, we may fill their weapons with ammunition (provide for their specialized needs); but here, neither a full stomach fights nor a full weapon, rather, it is here that this faith and spirituality is what fights and resists, and its strengthening, consolidation, and growth is with you (and the obstacle to this fundamental factor is the seminaries).
The dear clerics played a decisive role in encouraging and motivating the people to help, sacrifice their wealth, and provide the necessary facilities for the combatants, just as they performed this task with a sense of responsibility and great jihadist duty in managing this work and supervising the collection of public aid and delivering it to the fronts.
