Hassan E'zam Qodsi (one of the prominent figures of the Reza Khan era) writes in his memoirs when mentioning the events of the year 1301 SH / 1341 AH: After the aforementioned successes, Sardar Sepah thought that he must now attract the people's attention and make them believe in him, and the best way is through religious practices, especially mourning, which the common classes will notice.
Coincidentally, during the month of Muharram, when the general public is engaged in mourning [and] assemblies are held throughout Tehran, on the tenth day of Muharram (Ashura), Sardar Sepah led the Cossack detachment [with] a group of officials in front and individuals with banners and standards in an orderly manner...
Men and women among the people noticed that the Minister of War came to the mourning assemblies, and I, the author, observed the Cossack detachment both in Naseriyeh Street and in the Sheikh Abdul Hussein (Turks) Mosque in the manner mentioned (the Minister of War in front of the chest-beaters).
Also, on the eleventh night, the Cossack detachment came to the bazaar holding candles, observing the "Sham-e Ghariban" (Night of the Strangers), and Sardar Sepah himself, barefoot and with a candle in hand, came to the Grand Mosque belonging to the Kashis and the Sheikh Abdul Hussein (Turks) Mosque, which was one of the largest mourning assemblies of that day, and walked around the assembly; also, a mourning assembly was held in the Cossack House, and people from all neighborhoods of Tehran and Shemiranat went to those assemblies.
