"Taraweeh prayer according to the Sunnis is the recommended night prayers of the nights of Ramadan, which is a confirmed recommended act (Mustahabb Mu'akkad). The Prophet (PBUH) insisted that these prayers, like other recommended prayers, be held at home and away from congregational prayer to perfume the spiritual atmosphere of the house and create an environment free from distractions for solitude with God and private supplication to Him. When he saw that people had a desire to perform these prayers under his leadership (Imamate), he prevented them from this action. However, after him, Umar ibn al-Khattab encouraged the people to perform these prayers in the mosque and in congregation. This innovation (Bid'ah) of Umar caused most Sunni jurists, without considering the Prophetic tradition (Sira) that they have narrated in their Hadith sources, to issue fatwas regarding the recommendation of performing Taraweeh prayer in congregation."

Considering this recommendation of the Prophet (PBUH) and the practical method that he has repeatedly recommended following, it becomes clear that performing Tarawih prayers in the month of Ramadan in mosques, whether in congregation or individually, is contrary to the Prophetic Sunnah and contrary to his repeated recommendations; because in this case, the houses of Muslims become like a grave that is empty of worship.
Kulayni has narrated from Zurarah, Muhammad bin Muslim, and Fudayl that they asked Imam Baqir (AS) and Imam Sadiq (AS) about performing the Nawafil of the nights of Ramadan in congregation, and they replied: ان النبی کان اذا صلی العشاء ال آخرة انصرف الی منزله ثم یخرج من آخر اللیل الی المسجد فیقوم فیصلی، فخرج فی اول لیلة من شهر رمضان لیصلی کما کان یصلی،فاصطف الناس خلفه فهرب منهم الی بیته و ترکهم، ففعلوا ذلک ثلاث لیال، فقام(ص)فی الیوم الرابع علی منبره، فحمداللّه و اثنی علیه، ثم قال: ایها الناس ان الصلاة باللیل فی شهر رمضان من النافلة فی جماعة بدعة وصلاة الضحی بدعة، الا فلاتجتمعوا لیلا فی شهر رمضان لصلاة اللیل ولاتصلوا صلاة الضحی، فان تلک معصیة الا فان کل بدعة ضلالة و کل ضلالة سبیلها الی النار ثم نزل وهو یقول: قلیل فی سنة، خیر من کثیر فی بدعة،((25)) When the Prophet (PBUH) would pray the Isha prayer, he would depart toward his home, and then at the end of the night, he would come to the mosque to perform prayer.
