In Tirmidhi's book, Shama'il is used in two senses: the physical characteristics of the Messenger of Allah(PBUH) and the prophetic temperament and character.
However, forty-five years before Tirmidhi, Ibn Sa'd addressed the Shama'il al-Nabi(PBUH) in the book al-Tabaqat al-Kubra and has mentioned some of the physical attributes of His Eminence scatteredly, such as: "ابیض العنق, his neck was like a silver cup"9, "قص الشارب, he used to trim his mustache"10, "حسن الوجه, he was handsome"11, "ازهر اللون, his face was rosy"12, "ضخم القدم, large feet"13, "یبلغ شمحته اذنیه, his hair reached his earlobes", "مفهوس العقب, he had delicate heels", "مثل الشمس و القمر مستدبر, his face was round like the sun and the moon",14 "ابیض الکشحین, white arms", "اهدب الاشفار, long eyelashes",15 "شش الاصابع, strong fingers"16, "شش الکفین و القدم, his hands and feet were well-built"17, and so on.
Translation of the Book: Shama'il al-Nabi(PBUH) authored by Abu Isa Muhammad bin Isa al-Tirmidhi, Translation and extraction of hadiths and footnotes by Dr. Mahmoud Damghani, first edition, 1372, Ney Publications.
