Farid Wajdi writes in the Encyclopedia of the Twentieth Century: Jahl and Jahiliyyah mean ignorance and the opposite of knowledge, and foolishness (safahat) is one of its effects and manifestations; it is the state that existed before the mission of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). 2-Historical Evidences of Jahiliyyah Illiteracy and the low level of knowledge, science, and writing among the pre-Islamic Jahili Arabs, especially among the Quraysh, is itself evidence of Jahiliyyah in its general and technical sense, and it confirms that they lacked culture and civilization. "Ibn Qutaybah," while admitting that writing and reading had no precedent among the Jahili Arabs, says: "...
