چکیده:
The main objective of the present article is to identify the importance of various factors such as years of service, rank, base, and executive responsibility in the salaries and benefits of faculty members of Mazandaran University, using available information and different models. In this article, studies conducted in Iran are first presented. Then, the characteristics of faculty members of the country's universities, with an emphasis on Mazandaran University and based on the latest information, are analyzed. After that, considering the information available in the year 1377 (1998/1999), in which 238 people were active as faculty members at Mazandaran University, the quantitative and qualitative changes created between the years 1362 to 1377 have been analyzed, and a comparison has also been made regarding the increase in salaries and benefits in the case of academic rank promotion versus the increase in salaries and benefits resulting from accepting executive responsibilities. In the continuation of this article, the relationship between changes in the salaries and benefits of faculty members and the cost of living index is also examined. The results obtained from the present article show that the annual increase in salaries and benefits related to faculty members has not been adjusted in proportion to inflation at all. Another important result of the present article is that the increase in salaries and benefits of faculty members due to holding the intended executive positions is greater than the increase in salaries and benefits resulting from a one-degree promotion. This issue has been confirmed for the years 1375 and 1377. In other words, the economic incentive regarding the improvement of the scientific level and academic rank of faculty members—which is not possible without regard to research work and improving their scientific quality—is significantly less than the material incentive offered for holding executive positions. Furthermore, the present article shows that in most cases, the increase in salaries and benefits is not related to the scientific characteristics (rank, etc.) of the faculty members. Therefore, it is suggested that higher education officials in the country at various levels, when drafting executive regulations that lead to an increase in salaries and benefits, should also take into account the scientific characteristics of university faculty members in the amount of their salary and benefit increases.
