چکیده:
The history of attention to education in economic literature dates back to the era before Adam Smith, although the economics of education entered the mainstream of economic science as an independent branch in the early 1960s. Since then, the scope of topics under investigation in the economics of education has found great diversity and breadth. One of the main objectives of this article is to explore and study in detail the position of education in economic literature and the trend of the formation of the economics of education, along with the transformation and diversity in the scope of topics covered by this branch of human sciences. Alongside this objective, the position of this science in the higher education system of Iran has also been explored. In this regard, the following results have been obtained: (1) at the beginning of the formation of 'economics of education,' the dominant topics in this field were focused on studying the effect of education on the economy, but recently, the research axes of this branch of science have also expanded to the application of economic science and economic analyses in the production of educational and research services, and these axes have gained special prominence; and (2) despite the long history and wide scope of topics in the science of economics of education, the economy and educational systems of the country face numerous problems, and addressing these problems is among the research fields of specialists in the economics of education. One of the main reasons for this situation is that in the higher education system of Iran, neither the education and training of 'economists of education' holds a position, nor is the necessary research in this regard given the required attention. To solve part of the aforementioned problems, the establishment and launching of an economics of education specialization has been proposed as a fundamental solution.
