چکیده:
The romance story is one of the ancient and popular literary genres of Persian literature. The aim of this article is to recognize this ancient and popular literary genre. To this end, morphology, which is one of the tools of genre studies in recognizing narrative literary genres, has been utilized. In this article, through the morphology of 22 romance poems, as the dominant and acceptable form of the romance story in Persian literature, the identification of functions, characters, and narrative patterns, and the classification of romance stories have been addressed. At the end, the romance story, as a Persian literary genre, is considered a narrative with an opening scene and 22 functions in which five main characters play roles and follow an almost single narrative pattern. Based on two criteria—the presence/absence of the 'removal of obstacle' function and the method of ending (the process of final functions)—this literary genre has three sub-narrative patterns or three sub-genres: material romance, spiritual romance, and material-spiritual romance.

However, regarding the morphology of romance stories as a macro-structure in Persian literature, two works have been published so far: Mohammad Rezaei-Rad, for the first time in the article "An Introduction to the Morphology of Romance Tales," attempts to "open a new window in the morphological criticism of ancient tales" and, by "creating methods and symbols, demonstrate the form and process governing romance tales" (1382: 183).
