Hearing of the dead is one of the issues that most Muslims accept, and even Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Qayyim, and Muhammad bin Abdulwahhab, who have differing opinions from Muslims on some matters, also accept the hearing of the dead. However, today, the Wahhabis, who consider themselves followers of these individuals, deny it; by denying it, they consider the seeking of intercession (Tawassul) and seeking help (Istighatha) of Muslims from religious figures to be invalid, useless, and sometimes polytheistic (Shirk), and they take actions against Muslims. Therefore, it is worth discussing in this field and using various proofs to investigate whether the deceased have hearing or not. Of course, in this article, we do not intend to state and critique the evidence of the issue, but rather we strive to show the disagreement of the Wahhabi opinions not only with the scholars of Islamic schools of thought but also with their own great and trusted scholars, so that the distance of Wahhabi views from the majority of Muslims becomes clear.
1 Given that Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab has narrated this report and has no criticism of it, it can be inferred that he believes in the hearing of the dead (sama' al-mawta), and this report explicitly indicates that the deceased hear.
He has gathered his views regarding the life of the Barzakh and the hearing of the dead in a separate book titled Al-Ruh. At the beginning of the book, in a chapter titled "Do the dead perceive the visitation of the living and their greetings?", relying on mutawatir (mass-transmitted) narrations, he claims that the Salaf believed that the dead perceive the visitation of the living, and he claims mass transmission and consensus on this matter:
2 Ibn Jarir al-Tabari; Muhammad bin Jarir al-Tabari writes that a large number of scholars have accepted the hearing of the dead and have authenticated the narrations on this subject: A large group of scholars authenticated the narrations of the hearing of the dead in the Battle of Badr, acted upon the apparent meaning of those narrations, and stated that Muhammad bin Isma'il Abu Abdullah al-Bukhari, Sahih al-Bukhari, vol.
