In the present essay، the noble and holy tradition "يكون بعدي اثناعشر" narrated by the holy Prophet، and two sets of Ahl-e Sunnah viewpoints in this concern have been studied. The first category includes those views which attribute the tradition to the caliphs [of Ahl-e Sunnah]، and the second classification of the narration attribute the tradition "يكون بعدي اثناعشر " to the [Shiite] Imam– the infallible. The present study in addition to surveying the first view strengthens the second view.

Examination of the Hadith A) Chain of Transmission and Text of the Hadith The hadith "یکون بعدی اثنا عشر خلیفة"21 is a hadith that is found through multiple routes and various chains of transmission from a number of companions such as Jabir ibn Samura, Anas ibn Malik, Abdullah ibn Masud, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn As, Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, and Abi Juhaifa in the primary books of the Ahl al-Sunnah, and almost all the great scholars of this school agree on its authenticity and its issuance from the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family).

The View of Qadi Iyad and Hafiz Bayhaqi Qadi Iyad says regarding this matter: 'It is possible that the intention of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was that after me, during the time of the power and glory of Islam, there will be twelve caliphs, and this number continued to exist until the time of Walid bin Yazid, when tribulations arose, and until the fall of the Umayyads and the dominance of the Abbasids.
