Now, in light of Islamic narrations—especially the hadiths of the Sunni books—we examine the verbal and practical methods of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), both of which indicate that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) used to prostrate on the earth (soil) and on objects made from certain plants, such as mats. A group of Islamic traditionists have narrated from the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) that he said: «جُعِلَت لِیَ الْاَرْضُ مَسْجِدا وَ طَهُورا؛ (1) The earth has been made a place of prostration and a means of purification for me. The Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Whenever one of you performs prayer, he must place his forehead and nose upon the ground so that his humility and submission become apparent. Second Category of Narrations Some of the hadiths that indicate the Sira (practice) and action of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) regarding prostrating on the ground and components of certain plants, such as mats, include: 1. Ibn Abbas says: «اِنَّ النَّبِیَّ صلی‌الله‌علیه‌و‌آله سَجَدَ عَلَی الْحَجَرِ؛ (5) Indeed, the noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) prostrated on a stone.
