Rashid al-Din Fazlullah has narrated the story of Ghazan Khan seeing the Messenger of Allah(ص) in a dream, writing: "And between them—the Messenger of Allah (ص) and Ghazan Khan—much conversation took place, and the Commander of the Faithful Ali, Hasan, and Husayn (peace be upon them) were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he praised them and said that you should be brothers, and he spoke until the King of Islam embraced them and accepted brotherhood from both sides... The depiction provided by Qashani regarding the disputes between the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools in the presence of Ghazan Khan's successor (Sultan Muhammad Khodabandeh or Oljaytu) is interesting; he presented the report in such a way that it shows the Shah suffered greatly from the intensity of the conflict between these two sects, as he saw how each of them voted against the other and condemned one another. Among the scholars present, the Allamah became the Shah's favorite; as "the King chose Jamal al-Din al-Mutahhar from among them and appointed him to his service, and granted the others permission to depart to their familiar homelands, and at all times he was engaged in debate and discussion with Jamal al-Din ibn al-Mutahhar regarding the issues of the principles of theology and jurisprudence, such that it became firm and established in the King's mind that none but Ali and his Ahl al-Bayt were of the bone and essence of the Messenger, peace be upon him, and the rest of the companions were strangers".
