If the patient can stop their self-reproach after receiving the psychoanalyst's instructions, they will present us with a mass of psychic material (thoughts, imaginings, memories) that are already under the influence of the unconscious and stem directly from it, placing us in a position where we can guess what materials the patient has suppressed in their mind and ــ based on the information we provide to them ــ increase the "Ego's" knowledge of the contents of the unconscious.
Several references to a deeper connection [between the repression of sexual impulses and civilization] will support this theory: early childhood ــ during which the "ego" begins to differentiate itself from the "id" ــ is also the period of initial sexual blossoming, which ends in the latency period; this period initial decisive period is subsequently consigned to childhood forgetting, and it is unlikely that this forgetting is accidental; and finally, the fact that biological changes in sexual life and the innovations of sexuality (such as the beginning of the two-stage nature of this function which we mentioned earlier, the disappearance of the periodic state of sexual arousal, and the transformation of the relationship between female menstruation and male arousal) have certainly played a significant role in the gradual evolution from animals to humans.
The combined functioning of these two factors (that is, the real danger in the present and that other danger which relates to the evolution of the human species and which the child has remembered), compels the child to defend (repression), a defense that is fruitful for a short time but subsequently loses its psychic efficacy, because the later revival of sexual life causes the reinforcement of those instinctual demands that had not been satisfied in the past.
