"از نظر هایک نه غرایز انسان بهطور طبیعی انسان را به سوی تمدن جوامع گسترده رهنمون میکند و نه عقل انسانی دارای آنچنان توانی بوده که بتواند نظم پیچیده لازم برای امکان یافتن جوامع گسترده را طراحی کند.
در اندیشه هایک عقل و ذهن فعال انسان محصول فرهنگ و سنت است نه منشا آن و اگر بشر توانسته است با مهار کردن غرایز خود و ایجاد قواعد رفتاری متغایر با آنها،جوامع هرچه گستردهتر و متمدنتری به وجود آورد،این در درجه اول در سایه برخی سنتهای مناسب امکانپذیر شده است.
اما همه عقلگراها،فیلسوفان و دانشمندان این واقعیت را نمیپذیرند و بسیاری معتقدند که ترقی و تمدن در گرو عقل محاسبهگر انسان است و برای دست یافتن به جامعه مطلوب که بهطور عقلایی طراحی و ایجاد میشود،باید همگی آن قواعد رفتاری و سنتهایی را که نمیتوان توجیه عقلانی برای آنها متصور بود،به کناری نهاد و اخلاق جدیدی را پیریزی کرد.
به عنوان مثال اگر اصل همبستگی و تعاون که هستی و قوام گروههای کوچک اغلب به آن بستگی دارد، به تمامی عرصههای فعالیتهای اجتماعی و اقتصادی در جوامع بزرگ تعمیم داده شود،ثروت، رونق،کارایی و در نهایت قوام و هستی این جوامع،بهتدریج رو به زوال خواهد نهاد زیرا یکی از مهمترین عواملی که کارایی انسانها را در جامعه مدرن بالا برده و ثروت و رفاه افراد را فزونی بخشیده عبارت است از وجود مالکیت فردی و اعمال رقابت در حوزههای گوناگون فعالیتهای اقتصادی."
