"طرح پرسشها و نگرانیهای مربوط به قرن دوازدهم دربارة طبیعت انسان بر مجسمهسازان بیش از نقاشان، شاعران یا موسیقیدانان اثر گذاشت؛ چگونه پس از چنان سنت پایداری فیگور انسان بهعنوان شکل مرکزی در مجسمهسازی جایگاه خود را ازدستمیداد؟ نقاشان کوبیست بر این فرض، که هیچ شیء مشخصی ـ و بهخصوص فیگور ـ مقدس و محترم نیست، تأکید کردند؛ اما، این امر موجب رنجش خاطر معاصران مجسمهساز آنها نشد؛ «آنچه مجسمهسازان را مجذوب کرد، آن چیزی بود که برای بدن انسان در چارچوب لغات جدید و سطوح تراشخورده و فضاهای تهی رخ میداد.
آنچه در این آثار جلب توجه میکرد این بود که برای بسیاری از نقاشان ـ آبسترهاکسپرسیونیستهایی مثل دکونینگ و پولاک ـ بدن انسان چیزی جز تمثالی اتفاقی نبود، اما برای مجسمهسازان حاضر در آن نمایشگاه، فیگور همة هنرشان بود.
چارچوب تقسیماتی مشابهی ادراک آنها را از انسان همان طور کنترل میکرد که ادراک آنها را از اشیا تحت کنترل داشت و آن فیگورهای تراشیدة بزرگ در سنگ بودنشان، در تکیدگی گسترة فضاییشان، در ناتوانیشان برای حرکت و در کاستی خصایص فردی نشانگر این امر است.
تعهد رودن به فیگور انسان، همراه با میل شدید او به رهاندن بدن از قواعد گذشته، موقعیت جدیدی را در آغاز قرن بیستم فراهمساخت؛ زمانی که بسیاری از مجسمهسازان مجددا انسان را دستمایة آثار خود قرار دادند.
مجسمهسازان قرن بیستم دو گزینة اساسی برای کاویدن فیگور ـ شیء داشتند: پرداختن به این شیئیت، کیفیات فیزیکی و کیفیات حقیقی آن در مقایسه با ویژگیهای خیالی آن و یا بررسی قابلیتهای فضایی آن با درک این نکته که همچون بدنهای ما مجسمه در فضا قرار دارد؛ و این حاکی از امکان بالقوة حرکت است."
