We studied the effect of traditional supplementary feeding during pregnancy on neonatal birth weight and growth trend in Islamshahr by a clinical trial. Cases were 53 healthy females with no history of systemic or inherited disease, and no current medication use or drug addiction. The case group received the region’s traditional food (rice pudding, porridge, lentils, cheese, yogurt, eggs and milk with bread) supplying approximately 400 kcal and 15 grams of protein during the 4th to the end of the 9th month of pregnancy. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of confounding variables (e.g. protein and calorie intake, age, height, body mass index, age at first pregnancy, pregnancy status, last pregnancy spacing, number of siblings, abortions, stillbirths and low birth weight neonates, parity, activity, residency duration in the area, family size, education level, housing, case occupation and spouse occupation). Birth weight was 3.3±0.4 in the case group and 3.1±0.3 in the control group, and the difference (8.1%) was statistically significant (P<0.05). The trend of infant height and weight increase was followed till the fourth month of age. The trend of increase in the height and weight of infants was higher in cases compared to controls. Comparison with NCHS standard height and weight figures showed better growth rates during the first four months in case group infants.
