Increased estradiol and progesterone levels and decreased sex hormone binding protein (SHBG) can significantly increase occurrence and recurrence of breast cancer risk. On the other hand، it seems that exercise training have positive effects on these hormones in postmenopausal women. However، changes in these hormones in postmenopausal women with breast cancer following exercise training are unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes of sex hormones in postmenopausal women with breast cancer following 15 weeks of exercise training.
For this purpose، 29 postmenopausal women (57.27±6.31 years old) with breast cancer who had surgery، chemotherapy and radiotherapy and were under drug therapy were divided into two groups: experimental group (n=14) and control group (n=15). Participants of experimental group performed 15 weeks of exercise training and 4 sessions per week including walking (2 sessions per week) and resistance training (2 sessions per week that were different from walking days). Control group did not participate in any exercise protocol. Data were analyzed by ANCOVA. Results showed a significant difference in body weight، BMI، estradiol، progesterone and SHBG (p<0.05) after 15 weeks between the two groups. After 15 weeks، in experimental group، body weight، BMI، estradiol and progesterone reduced and SHBG increased significantly. It can be concluded that combined exercise training make optimal changes in sex hormone of postmenopausal women with breast cancer and the result can be the reduction of recurrence of breast cancer risk or its metastasis to other tissues.
