"بر این اساس ذهن میگوید:هر دو وجود دیگری هم که رابطۀ آنها همانند رابطۀ نفسو آثار نفس باشد،بهنام علت و معلول خوانده میشوند واحکام علیت بر آنها نیز بار است.
مراد او این استکه اگر ما«الف»را علت«ب»میدانیم فقط بدینمعناستکه همواره به دنبال مفهوم«الف»مفهوم«ب»در ذهن ماتداعی میشود و این رابطۀ تداعی و همخوانی ناشی ازتعاقب دو پدیدۀ الف و ب در خارج است،اما اینکه بیناین دو رابطۀ تعلق و وابستگی وجودی برقرار باشد،قابلدریافت تجربی نیست.
9-اگر اصل علیت به عنوان یک اصل عقلی قبل از تجربهانکار شود،مستلزم آن است که دانشمندان تجربی پیشاز مشاهده و آزمایش هرگز بدان باوری نداشته باشند،درحالیکه نفس اقدام آنان برای مشاهده و آزمایش،خودمبتنی بر این باور است که هر معلولی ناشی از علتی است وهرگز پدیدهای بدوت علت رخ نمیدهد(دقت شود).
از سوییهمۀ عالم فعل خداست و تمام حوادث عالم مستقیما وبلاواسطه از ارادۀ ذات باری ناشی میشوند،پس بینحوادث هم نمیتوان رابطۀ علیت قائل شد،بلکه باید گفتکه عادت الهی بر این منوال است که پدیدههایی محققسازد که ما آنها را علت میپنداریم،یعنی در حقیقت نهرابطۀ بین خداوند و افعالش رابطۀ علیت است و نه بینپدیدههای عالم امکان چنین رابطهای وجود دارد.
آنچه اینک در بحث ما مهم است این است که ببینیماز چه راه میتوان معلولیت عالم را اثبات کرد تا آنگاه بهحکم قاعدۀ علیت به اثبات خداوند به عنوان فاعل الفواعلو علت العلل برسیم.
برخی فیلسوفان غربی چنین پنداشتهاند که مفادقاعدۀ علیت این است که«هر موجودی محتاج علتاست»از اینرو بر فیلسوفان الهی اشکال کردهاند کهبه مقتضای این قاعده نمیتوان به وجود موجودیبهنام«خدا»معتقد شد،چراکه چنین اعتقادی به معنایقبول استثناء در احکام عقلی است و حال آنکه احکامو قواعد عقلیه استثناء بردار نیستند."
