The aim of this research is to study the effects of aerobic training on leptin
and some other hormones (Insulin, Cortisol, Thyroxin and Thyridothyronin),
and also to investigate the relationship among the changes of these hormones
with leptin in non-athlete male students of Shiraz University. Forty non-
athlete male students ( age, 20+1.7 years; weight, 86=8 kg; height, 1734
cm; BMI, 28.7+0.5 kg/m? and Vo,max, 44.2+3.7 ml/kg/min) were chosen
and divided into two groups of aerobic (n=20) and control (n=20) groups.
The training period was 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week. The training began at
an intensity corresponding to 50 to 55 percent of HRmax and ended at 65 to
70 percent of HRmax for the last week. The exercise duration in each
session excluding warm up and cool down period was 15 minutes (Balk
Field test). The variables of the research were measured 5 times, before
training, and at the end of the second, fourth, sixth and eighth weeks of
training. The subjects who were under medication were excluded from the
study. Plasma leptin was measured by RIA method and other hormones
including insulin, cortisol, thyroxin and thyridothyronin were measured
using special kits by ELISA technique. The statistical analysis indicated
significant decreases for leptin and insulin whereas, levels of cortisol and
thyroxin were significantly increased (P<0.05). Moreover, significant
relationship was observed between the decreases of leptin and insulin
(r=0.82), as well as between the decrease of leptin and increase of cortisol
and thyroxin (r =-0.67 and r=-0.62, respectively). Intensity and load of
exercise and the level of subjects’ fitness might be effective factors to cause
significant changes in leptin, insulin, thyroxin, cortisol and thyridothyronin.
These hormonal changes might finally lead to the increase of the available
energy, which strengthens this claim that the increases in available energy
would lead to the decreases of leptin production.
