The study of Islamic urban form has been placed at the junction of various disciplines. Although the vastness of researches has contributed to our understanding of the complexities of Islamic urban form، the conventions and research objectives of different disciplines have led to confusion and bewilderment in this field. The present study attempts to identify، classify and interpret، or map the main researchers in the study of Islamic urban forms. The model selected and used for this research is the one presented by Gauthier and Gilliland in 2006. For this purpose، a two-layer survey of current approaches in this field has been presented. Accordingly، at the first level، the studies have been divided into cognitive and normative categories according to their heuristic purpose. Cognitive studies are those primarily aiming at providing definitions and/or developing an explanatory framework، whereas normative studies aim at determining qualities based on which the city should be planned or built in the future. Then a secondary distinction is drawn between the internalist approach (which considers the urban form a relatively independent system) and the externalist approach (in which urban form stands as a passive product of various external determinants). The results of the study demonstrate that although many studies have been done on Islamic urban forms، most of them have merely attempted to determine and explain urban forms and therefore a scarcity of studies on the musts and necessities of planning and designing forms based on Islamic principles is quite manifest.
