The open space has been an inseparable part of human life up to now and man has lived through connection with
the open space, but man has been forced in today's residential units to choose a vertical residence and completely
ignore the presence of nature and connection with it. Nowadays, open spaces do not have the meaning and
concept of the past and lack the architectural value, because these spaces are not initially designed and are indeed
the remaining of the previously built spaces. However, the open and semi-open spaces have long played an
important role in the space architecture of traditional buildings so that their geometry has benefited from the
environmental features and most of the individual and social activities of man have occurred in them and they
were constructed in the buildings together in the past. Open spaces today can be a good solution to the
relationship between human life and nature, since they play an important role in human life both psychologically
and physically. The present research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the researchers used the
library method and reviewed the documents to define the open and semi-open spaces, describe the background
and history of modern housing and compare its characteristics with those of traditional housing. Subsequently,
by raising the physical and mental needs of humans, they determined a theoretical framework for the spaces
under study. They performed in the second stage of the research a field survey by collecting the existing samples
and analyzing them based on the criteria of the first stage. The results of this study are guidelines for designing
private open and semi- open spaces in housing, which is based on three levels of solutions, strategies and
suggestions for design.
