The notion of social alienation and its dimensions and factors are analyzed in most cultures and societies as a social problem. This concept implies a sense of separation and a lack of mental bonding between the individual and the community and will stop the socio-cultural development of society. Imam Ali (AS) faced major political and social events during the caliphate period. Confronting foreign and domestic enemies and neglecting people from the genuine Islamic culture caused them to feel distinctly and alienate between themselves and the surrounding society, which is clearly reflected in the sermons and letters in Nahj al-Balagha. The present study attempts to analyze social alienation of Imam Ali (AS) via a descriptive and analytical method and based on Melvin Seeman’s theory. The results of the research show that the feeling of powerlessness, social anomalies and cultural feelings of hatred are the most important factors in feeling social alienation in Nahj al-Balaghah.
